The Cicada Parade in Jefferson Park is a celebration of nature’s most single-minded romantics: Annual Cicadas! Emerging for their brief, glorious moment in the sun, these summer cicadas throw themselves fully into life—singing, seeking, and soaring.
While the emerging hordes of Periodical Cicada broods often steal the spotlight, we're here to celebrate the Annual Cicadas (also known as 'Dog-Day Cicadas') who grace us with their presence every year, rather than every 13 or 15 years. These Annual Cicadas are the reliable summer visitors whose song you can count on as your background soundtrack.
Join us in embracing their love-drunk urgency and revel in the beautiful, clumsy chaos of being alive in RVA.
Thank you all for joining our 1st Annual Cicada Parade — a joyful, noisy, slightly chaotic celebration of our loudest summer cicadas, right here in Richmond, VA.
Planning for the 2nd Annual Cicada Parade (& festival?) is already underway! Dates for our August 2026 event will be announced well in advance of the Parade so you have plenty of time to make a costume, learn how to kazoo, and embrace the silliness of it all.
After moving back to RVA in 2019, I fell in love with the New Year's Day Cone Parade in Carytown, Richmond, VA, and its whimsical celebration of bringing positive energy to the start of the new year. As an enthusiastic leader of irreverence and shared joy, I wanted to create my own absurd celebration. With a fascination for the annual cicadas, it was only fitting to launch the CICADA PARADE in Jefferson Park, celebrating the arrival of summer cicadas in style.
